Choir pirates sing for cancer charity

JUNE 23: Over twenty choristers gathered in Caterham shopping mall yesterday to entertain Saturday morning shoppers as part of the annual Caterham Festival. The choir was again sharing the proceeds of the charity collection with Marie Curie Cancer Care, which has close links with Caterham and choir members.

The buckets were soon rattling from shoppers' donations, encouraged by choir wives Linda Taylor and Christine Callender.  The choir sang along to numbers from their latest CD, Brothers, Sing On! as well to favourite songs from earlier recordings such as Battle Hymn, Rhythm of Life, Those Magnificent Men and African Prayer.

They also covered their newest song, Anthem from the musical Chess, due to be premiered at the Summer Patrons' Concert on 13 July. Highlights were renditions of the Song of the Jolly Roger, where the choir sported eye-patches and waved a Jolly Roger flag, with Dave the Conductor resplendent in a pirates’ hat.  All were manufactured by Angela Watkins – wife of second tenor stalwart Trevor.

The Caterham shoppers clearly enjoyed the entertainment, judging by their warm comments and generous contributions.  The choir enjoyed the occasion too, many retiring afterwards to the gloriously sunny beer garden of the adjacent William Garland pub.
