SPRING DOUBLE FOR WALKERS

The choir walking group notched two walks in the space of four weeks, both taking them through delightful Surrey countryside on routes designed by the new group navigator, Dave Bannister.

The first walk, on April 29, began and ended at the Bell in Outwood.  It covered a mix of farmland and woodland, and had the customary mid-route refreshment stop at the Jolly Farmer in Horne. Fourteen choir members convened at the Jolly Farmer of whom thirteen took part in the full circuit of 5.2 miles – setting a new record for the group.

The walkers braved a 15-minute hailstorm on the southerly leg to Horne, but completed the walk in bright sunshine.

Starting point for the walk on May 22, another circular route, was the Skimmington Castle at Reigate Heath.  Walkers had the benefit of Banners’ expert exposition of walk landmarks such as Surrey’s WW2 pillboxes, built as defensive lines in the event of a German invasions; and several crossings of the River Mole, which flooded badly in the great storms of January 2014.
