Songs for a summer evening

JUNE 11: The Croydon choir staged a successful and enjoyable summer concert at Whitgift School yesterday, delighting a 200-plus audience with a selection of pieces, some familiar, some new, from its current repertoire.

The two new pieces were Scarborough Fair and The Sound of Silence, which the choir has been rehearsing since Christmas.  Among the familiar pieces which proved especially popular were Bring Him Home and American Trilogy.

Come and try us!   We are presenting an Open Evening on Thursday 19 October.

We welcome new members for our choir, which we consider the most exciting men's choir in southern England.   We are holding an open evening in October, which presents an ideal opportunity to come and find out more about us.

The event is to be held at our regular rehearsal venue, Sandilands Sports Club in Addiscombe.  You are invited to arrive at 7.30pm, ready to start at 8pm.   The  club has an excellent bar, with several varieties of real beer usually available. Choir members will welcome you and discuss which section of the choir would suit you best.

Choir members sing at a recent concert

At 8pm we will start with singing some well-known songs together.  We will provide the words and music. Then we will learn a new piece together, something simple and appealing, to show how we learn to sing in harmony.

After the choir has demonstrated a few songs from its current varied repertoire, we will explain how newcomers can join the choir and the steps to singing in their first concert, probably as early as 9 December.  We'll finish the evening with a drink in the bar, where you can see and join in the social side with some informal "apres" singing.

This programme is intended to provide a smooth entry into the choir, with assistance all round for those who need it.  Ours is an informal choir.  You do not have to read music, and there is no formal audition, only a "voice test" to decide which section you should sing with.  (There are four sections:  top tenors, tenors, baritones, and basses.)

We have a strong social life, with "beer and ditty" sessions in local pubs most Fridays, a choir walking group which has outings of 5-6 miles every three weeks or so, and an annual weekend tour - this year we went to Cheltenham to stage two concerts and more informal singing.  Take a look at our Home page for a sense of our full range of activities.  You can read reports from the walking group here.

Sandilands is in Addiscombe at the junction between Sandilands and Grimwade Avenue, CR0 5DB. Click here for map and directions.
