Walking report 2025 Feb 24

Wildest South London

Thirteen walkers left the Dukes Head on Wallington Green on February 24 2025 and were soon in Beddington Park. After crossing the bridge over the Wandle lakes, we headed for the northwest corner of the park and the entrance to Beddington Farmlands. Formerly a landfill site, gravel pit and part of the local sewage farm, this is now being renovated into a wonderful nature reserve and bird sanctuary.

We took the path along the western boundary, savouring magnificent views over lakes from the birdwatching hides.  It resembled Scottish moorland, yet was only two miles from central Croydon. Local expert Barry Farrant regaled us with unsanitary tales of his childhood escapades in the sewage farm as we made our way through a former military camp site to catch a tram at Mitcham Junction.

Bridge over placid water

After disembarking at Phipps Bridge we crossed Morden Hall Park for tea and scones at the cafe where we had entertained at its Festival of Blossom the previous year. After a couple of ditties we exited the park on to the Wandle Trail, where Hilary Smith took the bus home.

We followed the river southwards along the picturesque path for the next few miles. Due to the recent diesel leak and subsequent pollution, foam barriers had been installed every few hundred yards to absorb the oil.  Happily it looked as though this had been successful and the river seemed to be recovering well. Our final stage was along residential streets back to the Dukes Head for beer and a substantial dinner.
