Croydon boys sing off with Essex girls

JUNE 10: The choir staged a memorable concert at Shirley Methodist church on Saturday, sharing the stage with the Swift Singers from Essex. The Swifts call themselves a fun-loving ladies’ choir and so it proved, both during the concert and at an exuberant après at Sandilands afterwards.

Songs and drama on tour

MAY 21: The Croydon choir has returned from an exhilarating tour to Gloucester and Cheltenham, where the quality of its singing was matched by the drama of a mid-concert betrothal that delighted all those who were there.

The choir’s first concert, on Friday 17 May, was in Hartpury village hall, some five miles outside Cheltenham, with an enthusiastic audience of locals and choir followers.  The choir sang 17 pieces from its current repertoire and there were solo spots by choir tenors Nick Hewitt and John Aitkenhead.

Croydon boys do Mozart

Seven CMVC members sang in a performance of Mozart’s Requiem on Good Friday – April 21.  The performance, at St Mary’s church in Fetcham, near Leatherhead, was conducted by choir music director Roger Pinsent

The seven choir members – six pictured above, together with Roger (back row, centre) – were part of a 50-strong choir that Roger had assembled from a range of choirs, friends and friends of friends.  The choir had just two rehearsals, one of them on the afternoon of the concert.  

Goose bumps in Addiscombe 

MARCH 17: The Croydon choir staged an exuberant concert at St Mildred’s church, Addiscombe on Saturday March 16.  An enthusiastic audience, some on their feet, gave prolonged applause when the concert closed with Dona Nobis Pacem, sung as a round with the choir’s guest singers, the Tour Choir from Wetherby Preparatory School, London.

A big cheque for Crisis charity

FEBRUARY 26: The choir presented a cheque for £1100 to the Croydon Crisis charity for the homeless at its Sandilands rehearsal last week. CMVC raised the funds for the charity while singing at the Whitgift centre during the Christmas period.

Choir chair Kim Ormond said that the choir was delighted to make the presentation to “this fantastic charity”.  He added: “I feel so sorry that we should need a charity to do this kind of work – but I hope our contribution will make a difference.”

DECEMBER 12: The Croydon choir staged a spirited performance at the Whitgift centre on Sunday, winning applause and collecting for charity from pre-Christmas shoppers.
