Gareth name-checks CMVC
July 21: Gareth Southgate was quoted as name-checking the choir in a recent BBC interview following his retirement as England soccer manager.
Gareth Southgate: making CMVC famous (again)
Gareth was reviewing the highs and lows of his distinguished career with BBC Sport reporter Mike Henson.
Gareth related how, in June 1996, he attended a reunion concert staged by the celebrated Sex Pistols band. He was given the honour of welcoming the band, led by John Lydon, on to the stage. Both Gareth and the band were greeted with roars from the audience.
Then Gareth offered a dramatic comparison: “Twelve months ago I wouldn’t have been asked to announce the Croydon Male Choir,” he joked.
That quote, according to Henson, was taken from an interview with Southgate shortly after the Sex Pistols concert. It has attracted further public attention for the choir, following its dramatic success in achieving more than one million TikTok views for its rendition of the Robbie Williams classic “Angels” which it sang in a pub in Crystal Palace.
The choir is approaching Gareth to thank him for the mention, which comes as CMVC prepares to celebrate its fiftieth anniversary next year.
