A tale of two choirs

June 10: The choir staged a wonderful concert with its friends from the Croydon Philharmonic Choir at Croydon Minster on Saturday.  The choirs sang two sets each and then combined for a thrilling finale: African Prayer, conducted by CMVC music director Andrew Moore, followed by the Hallelujah Chorus, conducted by CPC music director David Gibson.

Choir parties in Caterham

Dave Bannister writes: Glorious sunshine and a thronged High Street greeted 25 choristers at the Caterham Street Party on Sunday June 1. The choir were part of hundreds of entertainments and stalls ranging from local crafts, drummers, various rock bands and tea dancing. Even choir top tenor Daffodil Dave and his partner Geranium Julie were plying their flowery wares opposite our stage.

Celebrating 50 years in Wales

Dave Bannister writes: Fifty-five singers and 39 supporters from Croydon celebrated the choir’s 50th anniversary on an exhilarating tour to Wales. After a quick stop (and a song) on the M4, the two coaches and numerous cars arrived late on the afternoon of May 16 in the enchanting city of Brecon, known as Aberhonddu in the local language.

A moving return to West Wickham

April 30: The choir staged a triumphant return to West Wickham on Saturday, presenting a magnificent and moving World War Two concert to follow its World War One commemoration there seven years ago.

The concert, at St Francis’s church, was to mark the 80th anniversary of VE-Day,  8 May 1945, which ended hostilities in Europe.  The choir sang a narrated selection of pieces to mark key aspects of the war.

Shield surprise for Kim

April 13: CMVC chair Kim Ormond was in for a big surprise at the choir’s annual dinner on Saturday.

The dinner traditionally includes the presentation of the choir’s annual Alan Robertshaw Shield. This is awarded to a member or members considered to have made a significant contribution to the choir’s activities during the previous year.

Lana blown away by choir

March 23: A brilliant CMVC concert in Selsdon yesterday brought a reunion with its former pianist, Lana Bode, playing with the choir after an interval of ten years.

Lana, CMVC pianist from 2010 to 2014, now a star of the international circuit, dazzled the audience with her playing.  She also delivered lavish praise for the choir’s singing – “I was blown away,” she said.
