Whitgift sing for local charities

DECEMBER 4: The Croydon choir was in fine voice at the Whitgift Centre this afternoon, making the first two charity fund-raising appearances during the run-up to Christmas.

Many shoppers paused to listen to the choir as it sang a selection of carols and other pieces from its current repertoire.  There was strong applause for You Raise Me Up, the Hallelujah Chorus, the choir's Christmas medley and long-time favourite White Christmas.

The charities who will benefit from the choir’s fund-raising include British Home care homes;  Croydon Vision, which supports the visually impaired; and Croydon Council’s “Just Giving” appeal for the victims and families of the Croydon tram crash.

A star of the show was Faye Berry, daughter of Dave (top tenor) and Julie Berry, who proffered her collection bucket to great effect, periodically having to empty it because the weight of coins was so heavy.

The choir also sold its Christmas CD to shoppers from a table maintained by Gloria Rowe and Christine Callender, and choir treasurer Ben Kennedy professed himself pleased with the day’s result.   The choir will be back on action at the Whitgift Centre on Sunday, December 18.
