A tale of two choirs

JULY 15: The Croydon choir closed its 2018-19 season with a brilliant summer/patrons’ concert at Emmanuel Church, South Croydon, on Saturday.  Along with the CMVC’s three sets of songs, the enthusiastic audience was treated to a delightful contribution by the Surrey Fringe, the Guildford barbershop chorus whose director is Roger Pinsent – also music director to CMVC.

Choir pirates sing for cancer charity

JUNE 23: Over twenty choristers gathered in Caterham shopping mall yesterday to entertain Saturday morning shoppers as part of the annual Caterham Festival. The choir was again sharing the proceeds of the charity collection with Marie Curie Cancer Care, which has close links with Caterham and choir members.

Croydon boys sing off with Essex girls

JUNE 10: The choir staged a memorable concert at Shirley Methodist church on Saturday, sharing the stage with the Swift Singers from Essex. The Swifts call themselves a fun-loving ladies’ choir and so it proved, both during the concert and at an exuberant après at Sandilands afterwards.

Songs and drama on tour

MAY 21: The Croydon choir has returned from an exhilarating tour to Gloucester and Cheltenham, where the quality of its singing was matched by the drama of a mid-concert betrothal that delighted all those who were there.

The choir’s first concert, on Friday 17 May, was in Hartpury village hall, some five miles outside Cheltenham, with an enthusiastic audience of locals and choir followers.  The choir sang 17 pieces from its current repertoire and there were solo spots by choir tenors Nick Hewitt and John Aitkenhead.

Croydon boys do Mozart

Seven CMVC members sang in a performance of Mozart’s Requiem on Good Friday – April 21.  The performance, at St Mary’s church in Fetcham, near Leatherhead, was conducted by choir music director Roger Pinsent

The seven choir members – six pictured above, together with Roger (back row, centre) – were part of a 50-strong choir that Roger had assembled from a range of choirs, friends and friends of friends.  The choir had just two rehearsals, one of them on the afternoon of the concert.
